In the Heart of the Mayob World
One of the great rewards of travel is the opportunity to understand our selves and our culture through others. Travel promotes tolerance and forces us out of our cultural short sightedness. In rural Yucatan, subsistence farmers celebrate, build, cook, heal, teach, plant and raise children in ways reminiscent of their pre-conquest ancestors. Rural indigenous cultures are changing fast and there is so much we can learn from them. Paradoxically, traditional lifestyles may have a greater chance of surviving because of the growing interest of savvy travellers looking for respectful ways to experience other cultures.

Although Maya is still used in most rural households, migration to cities is threatening the continuation of one of the world’s oldest surviving languages. Our interest in learning Maya promotes pride and economic benefits that may help in its preservation.
Our staff can provide informal, 15-minute classes in beginner Maya.
